FreshPro Foodmart now open
The opening of FreshPro Foodmart at Westwood Square Mall on March 26, 2026, marks a major turning point for the Malton community. For the past five years, this specific location at 7333 Goreway Drive sat completely empty after the local Walmart permanently closed its doors in June 2021. The loss of that Walmart was a significant blow to the area, as it was a primary source for affordable household goods and groceries for many residents, especially those who do not drive and rely on the nearby transit terminal.
The new supermarket has taken over the majority of the massive footprint formerly occupied by Walmart. While the Walmart closure left a “food desert” of sorts, where residents had limited options for fresh food, FreshPro Foodmart has stepped in to fill that gap with a focus on high-quality produce and authentic Asian ingredients. The store specializes in a wide variety of items from China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, which reflects the diverse culture of the surrounding neighbourhood.
On its opening day, the excitement was clear as hundreds of residents lined up early in the morning to be among the first shoppers inside. Many locals had spent years advocating for a second major grocery store in the village to provide more competition and better access to fresh food. The new store is quite large, stretching across the mall, and plans are already in place for a dedicated food court to open inside the supermarket as well.
This redevelopment is part of a longer history of changes at the mall, which originally opened in the late 1960s. Over the decades, the space has seen many different stores come and go, including big names like Zellers and Food Basics. With the arrival of FreshPro Foodmart, community leaders hope the mall will once again become a bustling hub for daily shopping. The store is currently open seven days a week, with 24-hour service available on weekends to accommodate different schedules.
