HISTORY
Malton My Neighbourhood Services (MNS)
My Neighbourhood Services (MNS) is a non-profit, charitable organization that provides community and settlement support services to individuals and families, particularly in the Peel Region. Its overall purpose is to help people build stable, connected, and healthy lives by offering programs related to parenting, youth development, employment, mental health, and newcomer support. The organization focuses on inclusion, accessibility, and empowerment, creating spaces where people from diverse cultural backgrounds can access resources, develop skills, and form supportive relationships.
MNS has a long history that reflects its growth alongside the community it serves. It was originally founded in 1975 by Carole Berry as the Malton Community Council, operating out of a small basement office in Westwood Mall. At that time, its main focus was helping newcomers settle into the community. In 1978, it became a registered charity and was renamed Malton Neighbourhood Services. Over the years, the organization expanded its programs and locations as the needs of the community grew, adding services such as youth programs, family support, and early childhood education. By the early 2000s, it had expanded into Brampton and moved into a larger headquarters at the Malton Community Centre. Recently, it rebranded to My Neighbourhood Services (MNS) to better reflect its broader reach and inclusive mission across the Peel Region.
Within this broader organization, the Black Family Support program is one of many initiatives that contribute to MNS’s goal of strengthening families and communities. This program includes several services that work together to support parents, children, and youth through culturally responsive and community-based approaches.
The Black Parent Support Program helps parents and caregivers build stronger parenting skills through workshops, discussions, and individual guidance. It focuses on child development and effective parenting strategies, while also providing structured activities for children so that both parents and kids are supported at the same time.
The Family Drop-in Program provides a welcoming space for families with young children to participate in play-based and educational activities. It supports children’s social and emotional development while also helping parents connect with others, share experiences, and reduce feelings of isolation.
The Black Loud & Proud Youth Program is designed for youth and young adults, offering a safe and inclusive environment where they can explore identity, build confidence, and connect with peers. Through workshops, discussions, and activities, it supports personal growth and provides access to mentorship and counselling.
Counselling Support Services offer confidential, culturally informed mental health support for individuals and families. These services address challenges such as stress, relationships, and emotional well-being, while also providing workshops that help improve communication and strengthen family connections.
Overall, MNS and its programs, including Black Family Support, form a comprehensive support system that combines education, counselling, and community-building. By evolving from a small local initiative into a multi-service organization, MNS continues to respond to changing community needs while staying focused on its core mission of helping people build stronger, healthier, and more connected lives.
